The subsequent Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern dynasties were a tumultuous time for Shandong Peninsula. In the Three-kingdom period, Shandong was divided into four provinces; in early Western Jin, there were five provinces. Since the Yongjia (307 ~ 313) of Emperor Huai of Jin, sovereignty of Shandong was successively shifted to Later Zhou, Former Yan, Former Qin, and Southern Yan. In 410, Liu Yu conquered Southern Yan and brought Shandong into the territory of Eastern Jin. Later the land fell into the hands of Northern Wei, Northern Qi, and finally Northern Zhou. In these turbulent years, aristocratic families developed powerful and self-sustaining farms. In the meantime, nomadic people such as Xiongnu, Xianbesi, Di, and Qiang moved into Shandong and lived together with aboriginal people. During the homogenization process, the aboriginal population also absorbed immigrants’ culture. Buddhism came to Shandong by the end of Eastern Han, and over time it became popular during the Northern and Southern dynasties.
