\nAfter the founding of the Ming dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang learned the lesson of the failure Song and Yuan dynasties and reinstated the institution of appointing his twenty-three sons as princes and entitled them to build up their palaces, bureaucracy, official robes, and privileges in their lands. The Ming princes did not rule local population,and they had nominal commanders of armies. They were symbolic reminiscent of ancient princes protecting the imperial court from outside threats. Thi Ming court appointed imperial sons as princes and provided them with gold certificates and seals. But it did not issue new certificate; it only allowed them to pass gold seals to their son, which is manifested in the wooden seal of “Prince Lu” with gold coating uncovered from the tomb of the prince. \nThe official outfit first appeared in the Shang dynasty, and came to fruition in the Zhou dynasty. Ancient emperors and kings, lords, and officials wear it on the occasions of grand ceremonies such as ancestral worship and court audience, the tradition of which persist all the way down to the end of the Ming dynasty, albeit frequently adapted to their historical circumstances. According to History of Ming, princes were mandated to wear Gun Outfit when they assisted imperial worship, visited ancestral temples, attended court audience, received titles, and married concubines. Zhu Tan, who was the tenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming dynasty, lived in Shandong Province. He was born in 1370 (Third year of the Hongwu Reign), and received title at the age of two months. He went to live in his princedom in Yanzhou at the age of fifteen. As a result, Yanzhou was elevated from the zhou (sub-prefecture), administering four subprefectures and twenty-three counties. Zhu Tan was well educated and hospitable to scholars, but he died young of elixir poison and received the posthumous name “Huang.” His mausoleum is located at the southern foothill of the Jiulong Mountain the boundary of Zouchen City and Qufu City. In 1970 ~ 1971, the Shandong Provincial Museum excavated this tomb, uncovering a large quantity of treasurable artifacts. These artifacts not only embody the superb craftsmanship of the Ming dynasty, but also manifest the lifestyle of Prince Lu.
