\nIn Chinese history, zither, chess, calligraphy, and painting, brush, ink, paper, and inkstone constituted the centerpiece of the life of cultured scholars, and became requisite furnishing of their studies. Albeit different in form, they shared common spirits and function and embodied the virtues of erudition and talent. Prince Lu lived in the homeland of Confucius and Mencius and was absorbed into the local cultural tradition. He ardently studied poetry, classics, rituals, and music, and availed himself of brushes, ink, paper, inkstone, zither, chess, calligraphy, and painting. The “Heavenly Wind and Oceanic Wave” zither, calligraphy and paintings of Song and Yuan dynasties, and books of Yuan print were most treasurable among the objects from the mausoleum.
