\nThe middle period was best represented by the remains at Yangguaanzhai settlements in Gaoling where the size of each cluster of houses exceeded that of earlier ones. Clear divisions at later contributed to a distinct social hierarchy. The Yangshao culture was at its height during this period. Painted pottery making flourished. Its decorative patterns being either realistic or abstract birds pates. triangles of curved lines, spots and stripes, etc. As the Yangshao culture came to its end, the tribes with clusters of houses dwindled rapidly both in size and number. It was during this period that cave dwellings were built as a new team of shelter in central Shaanxi, Labor was further divided and there appeared bottles specializing in pottery making, but pottery utensils were not as exquisitely made as those in the middle period. \nThe Yanguanzhai site is about 5,200 ~ 6,000 years old. It is the biggest settlements ruins in the middle and late period of Yangshao culture in Guanzhong area, covering an area of roughly 800,000 square meters. The hug residential area in the north is the only known one having a complete moat during the miaodigou period. At the west gate, the doorway, moat, drainage system and gate house were found. The over-worked human-face inverted pot, painted pottery basin with animal pattern and the cinnabar-painted human-face sculptures were excavated from the moat. The pottery workshop in the south provided evidence of division of labor while the cellars with pottery ares prove the private ownership at that time.
