\nTo the northwest of Chang’an are the eighteen mausoleums for the Tang emperors. They are arranged in a circle along the north bank of the Weihe River, either on the flat plain or on the mountain slopes, looking spectacular from distance. Most of the mausoleums are made in the mountain and large in scale. The grandeur of the mausoleum is a miracle in the history of tomb construction in the world. This giant and majestic lion is a reproduction of a stone one from the Shunling Mausoleum where the mother of Empress Wu Zetian from the Tang Dynasty was buried. Popular stone sculpture\u00a0for guarding imperial tombs used to be Tianiu and Bixie, the mythical creatures in the shape of deer with long tails, with the former having one horn and the latter two horns. Starting from the Tang Dynasty, stone lion became popular images for mausoleum stone sculptures when the real one were introduced into China through the Silk Road. This lion is full of vigor and power, an exact reflection of the heroic style of the flourishing Tang Dynasty.
