\nIn the Sui and the Tang dynasties, with a stable society, strong economy and the avocation from the ruling class, many kinds of religions and beliefs prospered. Taoism and Buddhism were the most widely practiced with Taoist monasteries and Buddhist temples scattered across the country in which different school were respected. Zoroastriansism, Nestorianism, Manichaeism and Islam were also introduced into China at that time. Religions reached their zenith in the Sui and the Tang dynasties. In order to justify their divine mandate, the Tang emperors respected Laozi as their ancestor, then the strongly revered Taoism and its alchemy. Chinese alchemists believed that, if the materials were stored in gold and silver vessels, the effect of the pills could be improved.
